Mu friend has just been diagnosed with GERD (acid reflux disease). He also takes several protein powders along with his weightlifting routine. ie. creatine monohydrate, amino acids, and other muscle building formulas. Should he discontinue these protein powders now that he takes NExium for his acid reflux ? Thanks!

Hi Sankalp - thanks for visiting the site. Wow, that's almost impossible to answer. I say that because I don't have any insight into your training background, current physical condition, eating habits, the time you have available or even what your targets are in terms of improving your physique. For example do you want to build a classical bodybuilder physique or put on some hard muscle or tone up or gain strength? Any one of these or numerous other goals are perfectly legitimate but each requires a slightly (in some cases radically) different approach if you want to achieve success. It may be useful for you to read through the articles on this site as they provide a lot of basic information on how to get started. You can then set out your training goals and work out a strategy to help you achieve these goals. It may be of use to read the comments I made to Patrick (see below). There's no easy answer and there's certainly no miracle supplement or training method that will provide all the answers but don't give up. No matter what your goals are and no matter what obstacles you face there's always a way to get there if you're determined enough. Read over the articles as I've suggested and don't hesitate to ask more questions if you need to - I can't give specific, definitive coaching instructions long distance but hopefully I might be able to point you in the right direction.

Hi Patrick - thanks for getting in touch. I don't know enough about you or your physical condition to offer specific detailed instructions but I can make some general suggestions. Make sure your health allows you to start exercising and discuss it with your doctor first if you have any doubts or concerns. Your first priority should be to start exercising at a low level of intensity and increase gradually. You don't mention if you haven't done ANY exercise or just no strength training but I would start off with some aerobic training as well as basic strength training to get your body used to new stresses. Go to the articles section of this site where you'll find loads of information aimed at beginning bodybuilders. I'd even consider starting out with bodyweight exercises (push-ups, pull-ups, dips etc) for a few months to get your body ready to lift - it all depends on your current condition. Be careful if you're training weights alone as accidents can happen. It won't be long before you exceed weights that are safe to do solo so it might be an idea to try out a gym - find one that's used by a variety of strength athletes and bodybuilders (not just a bunch of posers). A good gym will also have staff to offer constructive advice based on face to face observation and discussion (something that can't be done online). A cheaper alternative may be to consider kettlebell training - it all depends on what your targets are ( bodybuilding or general strength conditioning). If it's the latter click one of the kettlebell ads on this site for further information - just read some of the articles on that site or read their free reports ( don't buy anything until you're 100% certain that it's right for you). Don't be too concerned about taking supplements just yet as you'll not get much benefit from them at this stage of your training. Concentrate more on good nutrition based on a balanced diet containing natural foods. You could also download a sample copy of Will Brink's Bodybuilding Revealed ebook - it'll give you a flavor of what you need to do and it won't cost you anything - you'll also get some other useful freebies just for having a look. To get it just follow the Will Brink link in the navigation bar to the right. Feel free to ask more questions if necessary and let us know how you get on.
